Writing a Research Essay is An Easy Task

It's very common in higher education to be assigned a project such as a research essay. Even if it's something you've never encountered before, with a little bit of preparation you will be able to easily write your essay. Many students each year face this same challenge. There may be very little guidance in your assignment. If you don't know where to begin, here are some tips you can follow.

Tips for writing your research paper

Most students can tell you that it's simple: all you have to do is choose your topic, conduct some research and then use the information you found to write your essay. It's true you must do those steps, but there are important things to do along the way to help you craft a fabulous essay.

  • There must be a research question
  • Your topic can't be too general or too narrow
  • You must be able to use your sources properly
  • All of the paper must be written in your own words; no plagiarized
  • You must include an adequate bibliography
  • Remember to include journal articles

What are the main components of a research paper?

Topic selection - has your instructor assigned a topic or given you a list to choose from? Does the list consist of general ideas only, which need to be narrowed down? The advantage of a sufficiently narrow topic is that you can bore down deep into the details. When trying to cover a topic that's too broad, you can only skim the surface of a wide variety of details.

The research question - your research essay is not a report. You will not be summarized all the material that you read. The purpose of a research essay is to give you the opportunity to answer a question or something that is controversial, which is related to the topic being investigated.

Structure of your paper - there are definite sections which must be included. For example, the introduction, the body of the essay, and the conclusion. The purpose of the introduction is to give your reader an idea of what you will be covering in your paper. Your research question must be included. It's most effective as the final sentence of your introduction.

The body of the paper contains all the data and supporting statements. Formulate an outline to help you decide what order they should appear in. The conclusion serves two purposes: to summarize the research you presented in the body, and to present the answer to your research question.
