Writing an argumentative essay on gun control
You'll note here that the topic of the essay uses the preposition on. It is an argumentative essay which means that you need to take a point of view and argue the case for that position. But when it says on gun control then the topic itself is not suggesting for or against. You need to choose one of those sides of the argument to make your case. However, it is also possible to create an essay which lists both the pros and cons. We will take that approach in this article.
Banning guns will never work
If you are arguing against gun control, one point you can make and substantiate is that criminals will always be with us. In other words because there are criminals, they will always find a way to obtain a gun or guns. Where there is a will there is a way and if a criminal is determined to acquire a firearm, they will do so, banned or not.
Of course the counter argument to that is if responsible citizens are entitled to own and carry a firearm for the purpose of protection, criminals may be less inclined to have a themselves. If a criminal knows the law of the land is such that a citizen is entitled to learn self-defense and put those skills into practice even to the extent of using lethal force, life for the criminal has suddenly got a lot harder. Not only do they have to handle the police, criminals may well be confronted by citizens exercising their democratic rights.
Guns are not the only weapons
For people arguing that gun control is essential, it is important to understand that there are many other weapons a criminal can use. Obviously a knife is the perfect example. So if a person is intent on committing a crime and requires a weapon to help them carry out that crime, then banning guns will not prevent crime happening. The criminal will simply resort to whatever other weapon they can find and many of these are freely available.
For any student be they in high school or college, there are many examples of essays on gun control freely available online. Of course you should never plagiarize such essays but they are certainly a great help in understanding the various points and seeing how other writers structure their essay to reach their conclusions.
